The Other Brazen Geek, messaged me today, telling me about a new messaging app he had found called Signal. I’d heard of it before, when Edward Snowden endorsed it, but I stuck with Hangouts, because no one else I know uses Signal. Well, now that someone else was using it, I had reason to swap, and ask others that were still using Hangouts to swap too.
So far, my experience with Signal has been amazing. Sign-up was simple, importing all my contacts and conversations was all done as part of the on-boarding process. Adding the desktop app to Chrome and syncing it was a short process involving a QR-Code, and now I am up and running, I can send messages to people who often message me from my desktop, and have just the one application on my phone for all my messaging.
There are a few things I would love to see added, like SMS conversation syncing for the desktop application too, but I didn’t have that in Hangouts, and use Pushbullet to get that capability anyway, so it’s no big deal.
If you’re looking for a messaging app that allows SMS conversations alongside your instant messenger conversations, offers solid encryption for privacy, and supports multiple devices, I definitely recommend Signal.
